-Flamed

This is not a review. But i just wanted to put a quick note in about this. This past week I took my first shot at play writing. The Teacher really enjoyed my piece its a piece about identity. I’m going to post a copy of the synopsis.

FLAMED SYNOPSIS

Flamed is a play about finding your identity. It is a play about how we view ourselves and how others view us. Sometimes the two do some directly correlate with each other. Flamed is about finally finding out the truth about yourself. The play itself is a short liner piece that is centered on the main character Marcus.  He is at his own funeral. While at his funeral Marcus hears people speaking, many people he though loved and cared about him are revealed to have different opinions about him through their subtle text. He is largely shocked by what the majority of people are saying. One by one, it is revealed what his family and friends really think about him. Life will go on without him. His friends do not have as much of an issue with his death as he thought they would. His world is shattered in these poetic moments. Because of this he is forced to look at what he really thinks about himself and how he views himself. It is revealed that he hates who he is and has always wanted to change but he has never been able to do that. He cries out to God, why he has been forced to see this. Why God wouldn’t let him die in peace and makes him go through this even after his death. Finally it is revealed that his ex still loves him. At the end of the show. He is undone as reality rushes over him.

The main theme is identity and about how we view ourselves. I want the audience to be forced to look at what really matters in how they view themselves. I really want the play to be a punch in the gut of the audience. They are not meant to leave the theatre happy. They are meant to leave the theatre in distress, wondering about their own life, their friends, and their family. I also hope to dialogue about the hopelessness of life as a human being. Marcus is unable to change, has been unable to change. He is who he is. The only person that can help him change is a higher figure, whom he turns to after it is too late. The one figure that could have been a savior to him now becomes a viewer of his undoing. This play is meant to be very unsettling.
